A curated guide
Navigating POI is a full-time job. I've compiled the tools, specialists, and financial resources I wish I had when my FSH was 181.5 and I was searching for answers alone.
“How many answers are locked behind paywalls? How many women are navigating this darkness without a flashlight simply because they can't afford one? We're breaking them down.”
01 — Medical
Finding a doctor who sees past the "aesthetic of health" is vital. These organizations help you find specialists who actually understand POI — not just general menopause.
Provider Finder
The gold standard for finding "Certified Menopause Practitioners." Use their search tool to find doctors who specialize in early-onset hormone therapy and POI specifically.
Find a Provider →POI Specialist
Specifically dedicated to Premature Ovarian Insufficiency. They offer specialized medical information that typical "menopause" sites miss — because POI is not the same as menopause.
Visit Website →Reproductive Endocrinology
If fertility preservation is a consideration, SART's clinic finder helps you locate and compare reproductive endocrinologists and their success rates by region.
Find a Clinic →Bone Health
Because low estrogen accelerates bone loss, women with POI need bone density monitoring early. NOF has patient guides on prevention and treatment tailored to younger women.
Learn More →02 — Financial
These aren't just numbers — they're barriers. They're the difference between having options and having none.
IVF with Donor Eggs
$30,000 – $50,000+
Per cycle, with no guarantee of success.
Adoption
$20,000 – $45,000+
Depending on the route and agency.
Genetic Testing (Karyotype)
$500 – $2,000+
Often not covered by insurance. I couldn't access this for years.
Fertility Costs
Deep dives into the real costs of IVF, donor eggs, and adoption. Data-driven reviews of clinics across the South, including cost transparency most clinics won't give you upfront.
Visit FertilityIQ →Grants & Insurance
The National Infertility Association. They provide resources on insurance coverage advocacy and grants for those facing the $30k+ price tag of fertility treatment.
Access Grants →BIPOC Families
Specifically focused on helping families of color overcome the financial barriers to fertility treatment and adoption. Because the financial burden falls harder on some of us than others.
View Programs →Insurance Navigation
Helps patients navigate insurance denials, access financial assistance programs, and negotiate medical bills. Invaluable if you've been denied coverage for HRT or diagnostics.
Get Help →03 — Community
Finding your people changes everything. These are the communities built specifically for us.

Navigating the Southern healthcare system as a Black woman is a specific challenge. Here are the local Birmingham specialists and groups where I finally felt heard — not just "seen."
UAB Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility
World-class specialists right in our backyard. Essential for high FSH management, fertility consultations, and POI diagnosis. University of Alabama at Birmingham is one of the South's strongest research hospitals.
Visit UAB REI →UAB Women's & Infants Center
Comprehensive women's health care including menopause management, hormone therapy, and bone health. Ask specifically for providers trained in POI for younger patients.
Learn More →The Women's Network — Birmingham
A space for emotional support and professional networking for women in the Magic City. Community matters when the medical system fails you — and this group shows up.
Jefferson County DHR — Low-Income Health Resources
For those without insurance or in the coverage gap — Jefferson County has programs to help access specialist care. You deserve care regardless of your zip code or bank balance.
05 — Self-Care
POI affects more than your hormones. These resources support your body, mind, and spirit through the journey.
Bone Health
Get a DEXA scan
Ask your provider for a bone density scan within the first year of diagnosis. Low estrogen accelerates bone loss — catching it early makes all the difference.
Heart Health
Annual cardiac monitoring
Early menopause increases cardiovascular risk. A baseline EKG and lipid panel should be part of your annual care — not something you have to fight for.
Mental Health
Grief is valid here
The grief of a POI diagnosis — for fertility, for the body you thought you had, for the future you imagined — is real and deserves real support. Therapy is not optional, it's protective.
Nutrition
Eat for your hormones
A registered dietitian familiar with hormonal health can help you build an anti-inflammatory foundation. Calcium, Vitamin D, and Omega-3s are non-negotiables for women with POI.
If you know of a provider, a grant, a support group, or a community resource that helped you navigate early menopause — let's add it to the list. No one should carry this weight alone, and no resource should stay hidden.
